Arctic photo expedition

SAS Cargo and Trust Forwarding proud partners of Arctic photo expedition.

SAS Cargo Group A/S and its subsidiary, Trust Forwarding, are supporting an Arctic photo expedition by transporting vital expedition equipment to the Norwegian archipelago Svalbard/Spitsbergen.

Photographer Melissa Schäfer and producer Fredrik Granath are leading this project – named Ground Zero – which will result in television productions, exhibitions, and a large format photography book to be published in ten languages.

Melissa Schäfer explains “The epic tale based on actual events will cover the seemingly endless pack-ice of the Arctic Ocean and bring the audience close to the impressive wildlife that is struggling for survival in the most extreme, and most beautiful, environment on Earth”.

“Through the eyes of a very special polar bear, we will experience a world of ice in transformation, and learn how we are very close to the tipping point - the irreversible moment when the climate on Planet Earth begins collapsing. The Arctic, more than any other place, is our climate front line. The future of a living planet is directly tied to the future of this region. Because what happens in the Arctic doesn’t stay in the Arctic,” says Fredrik Granath.

Fredrik Granath continues "Work in the Arctic is demanding. It is a region which often offers the most extreme conditions on this planet. Uncompromised quality, reliability and performance must be at the core of everything. We are completely dependent on shipping and delivery of our equipment to the right place at the right time. We are very fortunate to be supported by SAS Cargo and Trust Forwarding. We have many years of experience in dealing with logistics providers, and SAS Cargo/Trust Forwarding deliver the top quality and services we require for this important expedition.”

“We are very proud to be able to support this expedition. It is a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase our expertise in handling sensitive shipments and customized logistic solutions”, says Søren Nørsø, Managing Director of Trust Forwarding.

SAS Cargo reduces CO2

SAS Cargo Group A/S delivers impressive results in reducing CO2 emission for ground transportation.

In parallel with SAS’ and SAS Cargo’s continuous efforts to reduce CO2 emission from air transport, SAS Cargo along with their supplier, Kim Johansen International Transport A/S, embarked in February 2016 on a project to reduce CO2 emission from ground transportation between Copenhagen and Billund.

SAS Cargo has as a general contractual requirement that their ground transport partners show commitment to reduce CO2 emissions and follow the same ambitious agenda as SAS Cargo.
The decision by SAS Cargo and Kim Johansen to jointly strive for reducing the CO2 footprint started years ago and resulted in a truck design, which can accommodate seven flight pallets in one truck instead of having to use two trucks, which was previously required. The 7 pallet truck started out between Arlanda and Helsinki, clearly showing reductions in fuel consumption and CO2.

In February 2016 the 7 pallet truck was introduced on the Copenhagen – Billund schedule.
The result six months later shows an impressive 40% reduction in CO2 emission.
“As environmental responsibility is a high priority for SAS Cargo, we have embarked on several environmental initiatives during the past years. We are particularly proud of this one as it shows such fast results”, comments Bente Øhlenschlæger, Manager Truck Operations, SAS Cargo.

“It is with great pleasure we can conclude that our continuous efforts and strengthened approach towards improving our environmental performance has resulted in further reducing CO2  emissions. We are looking forward to continue this successful partnership with SAS Cargo, who has particular focus on reducing CO2 in ground trucking, with further environmental and sustainable efforts”, says Kim Johansen, CEO of Kim Johansen Transport Group.
SAS Cargo and Kim Johansen have plans to continue their drive to reduce CO2 emission and are introducing these trucks to more destinations, for example on the Copenhagen-Frankfurt route.

SAS Cargo launches direct daily service to Miami

With the new launch of a direct service between Scandinavia and Miami, SAS Cargo is set to expand its network offer in the Southeastern US and Latin America.

Starting on September 28th, SAS will operate the new Miami route with its Airbus A330-300, offering daily services between the US' Latin American gateway and Oslo and Copenhagen. Oslo will initially be operated four days per week, with the remaining three days from Copenhagen.

"The Miami route is our seventh direct  service between the US and Scandinavia, and it’s the first time we have ever operated a direct flight into Southeast United States" says Leif Rasmussen, President & CEO, SAS Cargo Group A/S. "This new route will not only enable our customers in Scandinavia and the US quicker access to and from the Nordic markets and the industrially vibrant Southern US, but just as importantly, it will enable our interline partners in Latin America the ability to offer a faster direct service with SAS Cargo via Miami to Scandinavia for their flower- and perishable exporters. We offer connections from Panama, Colombia, Bolivia, Peru, Venezuela, Ecuador, Brazil, Chile and Argentina to all of Scandinavia via Miami. This through agreements with a number of airlines , among others, Copa Airlines, Solar Air Cargo, Bringer Air Cargo, Centurion Air Cargo, LAN Airlines and Aerolinas Argentinas”, continues Leif Rasmussen.

"The A330-300 is an ideal fit for the route" remarked Britta Toftum, Head of Cargo Sales North America, SAS Cargo Group A/S. “With its large cargo payload, we are able to accommodate the heavier perishables we expect from South America, and still have capacity to meet the general cargo demand from Miami and nearby catchment areas".

Air cargo general sales and service agent, Aviation Services (ATC), who will be managing the sales and commercial services on behalf of SAS Cargo Group A/S  in the Miami market, has played an important role in linking SAS Cargo with the several new interline partners to help expand SAS Cargo’s reach into, and out of, Latin America. "ATC is proud of our 14 year history as SAS Cargo's GSA in the southern part of the United States. We are especially excited about the opportunities that this new route represents, not only for exporters and importers to and from the US and Scandinavia, but more importantly because of the unique opportunity of creating new services for customers into and out of Latin America" said Timothy Pfeil, ATC's US VP and Managing Director.

Seven young Ospreys fly with SAS Cargo to Zurich.

Ospreys fly with SAS Cargo

Young ospreys fly with SAS Cargo.

Last month, seven young ospreys embarked on a flight with SAS from Norway to Switzerland.

These ospreys are part of a reintroduction project led by the Swiss organization Nos Oiseaux, in partnership with Østfold University College in Norway.

“Our project consists of moving osprey chicks from where they were born and reintroduce them to Switzerland, where they will live in an aviary for about a month, and then once they are ready to fly, they will be released. They will then be fed and monitored for about a month and a half until they are ready to migrate. This process is known as “hacking” and has already been successfully undertaken in conservation projects in many other places in the world”, says Wendy Strahm, Project Coordinator at Nos Oiseaux.

With the help of SAS Cargo and its subsidiary Trust Forwarding, these youngsters were safely transported from one habitat to another.

SAS Cargo and Trust Forwarding have many years of experience in handling sensitive air cargo transports. The transportation of these ospreys was carefully planned, monitored and carried out with the help of all partners at all stations.

“We are of course very pleased to be able to assist in such an important and interesting project”, says Leif Rasmussen, SAS Cargo President and CEO.

The seven young raptors – who at an adult age will reach more than 60 cm in length and 180 cm across the wings – had never been near humans before heading to the airport and it was therefore necessary to handle them with great care and sensitivity.

“Smooth handling and careful temperature control through the entire transportation chain are key components in our product offerings, ensuring safe and successful delivery of sensitive air cargo transport”, Leif Rasmussen continues.

The ospreys arrived safely a couple of hours later at Zurich airport and are now in good care with Nos Oiseaux until they are ready to fly themselves into Swiss airspace.
Wendy Strahm reports; “We are keeping them in the specially constructed “hacking” cages until they are ready to fly. Right now they are adapting to their new home and their new environment and, like all growing teenagers, eating a lot!”

(This information replaces “Operational News alert 05FEB2016 - UPDATE: Security Declaration for shipments bound for the United States”)

Shipments from these countries, must not be accepted for transport to the United States.

A written statement is only required if it is not possible to obtain and review sufficient information to establish whether the cargo originated in, transferred from or transited through a prohibited country.

Penguins can fly … with SAS Cargo

12 gentoo penguins travelled with SAS Cargo from Bergen in Norway to their new home outside Shanghai in China.

SAS Cargo and Trust Forwarding have many years of experience in transportations of various types of live animals across the world. Last week the task was to transport 12 gentoo penguins from Bergen Aquarium.

In order to avoid inbreeding at Bergen Aquarium, it was decided to sell 12 of the penguins to Hangzhou Polar Ocean Park and Zhengzhou Aquarium. Both places had been evaluated and were selected due to high animal welfare standards.

The transport had been planned for months to ensure a smooth and comfortable trip for the penguins. Customs clearance in China, blood samples and strict requirements for temperatures during transport required a comprehensive cooperation between Bergen Aquarium, SAS Cargo, Trust Forwarding, the Chinese Embassy and local authorities.

From the aquarium the penguins were transported to Flesland airport and flown to Oslo, where they stayed at Airpet Hotel. The next morning they were transported via Copenhagen to Shanghai. A veterinary followed the penguins all the way to Shanghai. A manager from Trust Forwarding followed them to Copenhagen and SAS Cargo staff were ready to take over in Shanghai.

Throughout the travel the temperature in the penguins’ compartment was kept below 10°C to give them the best comfort. According to the keeper, they were calm and spend most of the time standing at the cage door observing the surrounding during transit and at arrival. The 12 gentoo penguins have now arrived at their new homes outside Shanghai.
